National Park Service Founders Day is observed every year on August 25. The day recognizes the superior conservation and preservation efforts of the National Parks System. On August 25, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed the Organic Act. The Act established the National Park Service. As part of the Department of Interior, the National Park Service protects 400 areas across the 50 American states and territories and the district of Columbia. They are entrusted with the protection of national parks totaling 84 million acres! In 1872 Yellowstone became the first national park. Now, the National Park Service has 22,000 workers who are involved in permanent, temporary, and seasonal employment. An additional 340,000 volunteers are also enrolled with the service. These parks welcome almost 300 million visitors every year.
Without a doubt our family loves to be outdoors and looks forward to visiting national and state parks. The beauty and serenity of each landscape stirs the mind, body, and spirit. Whether the mind fathoms the vastness of a place like the Grand Canyon or the eye beholds the beauty of Glacier National Park or the soul feels the deep connection of indigenous history at Yellowstone, soaking up mother nature refreshes life holistically while indisputably muffling any material things this world thinks is important. It is serene like no other. Having land and not ruining it, is true art.
Meanwhile there are some quirky park names for sure! A few that come to mind are: Bumpass Hell, Big Bone Lick State Park, Tuzigoot National Monument, Dry Tortugas National Park, Nimrod Lake, Ha Ha Tonka State Park. Some great memories of us visiting national and state parks remain in my mind and we hope to make many more. But before that thank you for the 5 quirky finds as a twin-dad this week…..
1. At school pick-up. Do you enjoy having twins?
Have you ever had to carry 2 kids out of a store sideways like 1 big surfboard??
2. Having twins means rewatching your favorite childhood movies and realizing the annoyingly-strict parents actually made a lot of valid points!!
3. Parenting is sneaking in to kiss your kids when they’re asleep and sneaking out to curse when they’re awake!!
4. This week I ordered new Play-Doh for the twins and for convenience I had them ship it in brown color and completely dried out!! Stay-tuned for more twin-dad tricks..
5. Put the principal’s name down as the emergency contact on the boys’ back to school forms, since she can respond fastest without missing work. Follow-me for more twin-dad advice!!
